About

The Adelaide Summer Orchestra formed after discussions between community orchestras in Adelaide, South Australia, regarding the creation of a larger ensemble capable of performing large scale works.

The first concert took place in January 2013, with subsequent concerts in 2015 and 2016.  The intention is that this will now be an annual event. It is a wonderful experience that is much anticipated by musicians and audience.

AIMS

The aims of the Adelaide Summer Orchestra are

  • To provide the opportunity for community musicians to play in an orchestra of high standard

  • To provide the opportunity for community musicians to play large scale orchestral works that they might not ordinarily have the chance to play

  • To offer the wider community the chance to hear distinguished artistic works performed at a high standard at an affordable price

  • To create positive links between community organisations

  • To raise monies for charity, where possible

THE ORCHESTRA

Each year musicians from community music ensembles are invited to register their interest in playing. The project team and artistic management then select members to form the orchestra.

The orchestra rehearses the selected program intensively for two weeks in January, then presents a public performance.

Players pay a modest fee to cover expenses. Concert proceeds are donated to a charity.

Adelaide Summer Orchestra players are drawn from groups including the following:
